Parallels: Ozymandias in Alien: Covenant and Alien: Resurrection

“Distephano moved forward boldly, shoving Ripley, who was standing once more, to the middle of the room. “On the floor! On your face! Now!” he ordered, still shouting, still in cold command. She stood her ground, every bit as tall as he, and met his gaze defiantly, eye to eye.”

– Alien: Resurrection

“‘My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings. Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair.’” Walter moved to stand beside his twin. “‘Nothing beside remains. Round the decay, of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare, The lone and level sands stretch far away.’” David nodded once without taking his gaze from the silent city.“

– Alien: Covenant

“I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert… . Near them, on the sand, half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, and wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, tell that its sculptor well those passions read which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, the hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; and on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away.”

It’s interesting that A.C Crispin used Shelly’s description of Ozymandias for the description of Distephano as he yelled to put Ripley in her place. The symbolic notion that he is part of a civilisation doomed to fall to time. David’s quoting of Ozymandias similarly parallels this as he looks over the desolation of the Engineers city. He a creation who also dared to stand defiantly eye to eye to his creator and creators creator. And could be destined to share a similar fate.
