Meet Walter Analysis

Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus

Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow

Victor, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley

Walter quoting Victor Frankenstein in this commercial is intentional, as the prologue to Frankenstein, it leads us to explain that the following story of Alien: Covenant should serve as a warning to those who seek the acquirement of forbidden knowledge.

This particular passage Victor admits defeat in his quest for his role as God and creator, accepting it is better to be ignorant and blissful in comparison to the horrors he has faced. Accepting the limits of your capabilities is a safer path, rather than challenging limitations and causing more harm than good.

In short, be happy with what you have and do not strive for more, or face the dangers of the unknown.

Even the aesthetic tone of the commercial serves as a visual parallel to the life-bringing process which the Creature undergoes in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

The two Weyland Yutani employees, representing Dr Frankenstein and Igor prepare a lifeless body, bringing together pieces and assembling it like a puzzle. Once assembled, the technician adds the AMD chip to spark “life” into it.

2001: A Space Odyssey

The modern setting also pays homage to the space station waiting room in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. HAL 9000 played inspiration to Ash in Alien and continues the universe concept that “malfunctioning” synthetics are affected by conflicts between protocol and emotion.

Satan Presiding at the Infernal Council by John Martin 1824

The rings of light present in Walter’s surroundings are similar to the rings of light in John Martin’s painting depicting Satan presiding over his council in Hell.

The angles used in the commercial manipulate the rings into the figure of 8 number, or infinity symbol.

The figure 8 could represent Infinity and the eternal, everything good in the universe which is infinite, such as infinite love, infinite supply, infinite energy, infinite time.

Melanie De Biasio – I feel You

I feel you
A deep echo in me
A strong appeal for that mystery
I know you know

‘Cause I feel you
I won’t say why we met
It sounds too loud
I know you know

Fear is knocking on our door
But love is calling us for sure
The wind is blowing much too hard for love
There’s no reward

I feel you
A deep echo in me
A strong appeal for that mystery
I know you know

The lyrics of this piece was supposed to evoke interest in the commercial but I think the Lyrics also show what it is to be a Walter Synthetic.

He can understand human emotions although he has none himself, as he says in the “Phobos” video, he feels neutral to fear or any other emotional stimulation.

There is an echo of the user in the Walter model, each synthetic has a DNA sync of binding to its user and can be calibrated to suit their needs. The Walter model will know your every want and desire and will serve you.

After the “life” or use of the synthetic is over they are destroyed, they have a single purpose like any other tool. And once that tool has served its purpose it has nothing left to “live” for.

There is no afterlife or reward for a synthetic, although the Alien: Covenant novelisation explores the mind of Walter as he serves Daniels. Making him feel good because he served her, or could it be love? It is left ambiguous to the reader.

The line “The wind is blowing much too hard for love” could be in reference to Planet 4 and The Whirlwind of Lovers.

For Daniels, there is something appealing in hanging out with Walter. With him and his emotional restrictions, she is free to grieve in her own way and contemplate her lonely existence. There is no pressure on her to act a certain way or feel a certain way, though when she seeks an emotional response when she feels an affection towards him there is nothing.
