Well I told you I’d get out of Lynchburg

I bet you didn’t think it was going to be like this though did ya?

I ahh, I am about to go into hypersleep but I couldn’t do that without having one more drink with my little baby brother so…

Smuggled a little of our favourite onto the ship

When Faris and I applied for this job I never in a million years did I think I’d pass the background check

Yeah, Weyland Yutani I know you guys are gonna watch this, it’s a little too late to send me home now, so I might as well be honest.

I’ve been arrested 3 times and I have stolen a vehicle and I also punched a Police officer’s horse in the mouth on St Patricks Day and you guys have handed me the keys to the most expensive spaceship in history.

Suckers.

I guess when I wake up you are no longer going to be my baby brother, you’re going to be older than me.

I look forward to seeing how much hair you’ve lost, how fat you’ve gotten, and how big your ahh… boys will grow.

Ok, that’s it from me. See you when I see ya.

Tennessee mentions he’s from Lynchburg which is a City located in Tennessee and home to the Jack Daniels distillery.

Also, he mentions punching a police officer’s horse on St Patrick’s Day. Interesting to note, if you are looking at the philosophical influences within the Alien Universe. Friedrich Nietzsche went mad after allegedly seeing a horse being whipped in the Italian city of Turin.

The concept of time dilation and long-distance space travel was highly influenced by The Forever War(Which I was told by Wayne Haag that Ridley Scott used as inspiration for Alien: Covenant), in the story the main character Mandella experiences losing his family and friends through the time going past on Earth while he is fighting in the military. The same goes for Tennessee as his brother grows older as T is in Cryosleep.

Etymology

From Cherokee ᏔᎾᏏ (tanasi), believed to mean “winding river”.

Tennessee’s character is a homage to Stanley Kubrick’s legendary satire Dr Strangelove.

“If the film stirs the emotions and penetrates the subconscious of the viewer, if it stimulates, however inchoately, his mythological and religious yearnings and impulses, then it has succeeded.”

Stanley Kubrick

Some elements of the design of the spaceship in Alien had taken inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Stanley Kubrick having pioneered special effects techniques were further developed by Ridley Scott for Alien and George Lucas for Star Wars.

2001 is notable for its use of classical music:

  • Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra
  • Johann Strauss’s The Blue Danube Waltz
  • Atmospheres, Lux Aeterna, and Requiem by György Ligeti (though this was done without Ligeti’s consent) was the first wide commercial exposure of Ligeti’s work.

Thus Sprach Zarathustra appeared in the viral marketing for Prometheus and is also believed to be the inspiration of H.P.Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness, which also inspired Dan O’Bannon’s Alien and then influenced H.R.Higer’s design for the Pyramid or Egg Silo.

“the barriers to distance are crumbling; one day we shall meet our equals among the stars.”

Arthur C Clark, author of 2001 A Space Odyssey
